EWC training

We provide training both to employee representatives on European Works Councils and to management teams who run European Works Councils. We tailor our training programmes to the needs of individual companies and European Works Councils, covering the following themes:

  • Legal background – the “recast” EWC directive, national legislation, and EWC agreements
  • Understanding the purpose of a European Works Council and the role of employee representatives
  • What are “transnational issues”?
  • Topics for discussion and the meaning of “consultation”
  • The Information and consultation process – timing, frequency, provision of information, procedure for consultation, plenary and exceptional meetings, use of expert advisers
  • The role of the select committee and the employee chair
  • Handling confidential information
  • Reporting back to employees and local works councils
  • Link between transnational and national consultation
  • Time off and facilities for employee representatives
  • Changes to the European Works Council – corporate restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, changes to the agreement, renewal, renegotiation and termination of the agreement
  • Implications of Brexit
  • How to make your European Works Council more effective

We have provided training to the EWCs at the likes of AON, Atos, easyJet, GE Aviation, International Paper, Philip Morris, RBS, Ricoh, RSA and Thomas Cook.

Training is delivered by Philip Sack, Greg Holder, Brian Lewis and/or Lesley Eden who between them have deep expertise and long practical experience of European Works Councils. We have also delivered joint training with the UK trade union Unite in the past.
